Maybe you’ve had a friend who’s had LASIK surgery. Or a relative. But, do you know what LASIK actually is? Do you know what it can treat? Do you know how it’s performed? Or what you can expect? Do you know if you’re a candidate? Let’s not wonder anymore, let’s learn some of the basics about LASIK surgery.
What is LASIK?
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis and is often called laser eye surgery. It is currently one of the most common elective surgical procedures to be performed each year.
What does it fix?
LASIK surgery can be used to correct several issues:
- Presbyopia – farsightedness – where you can only see objects that are far from you clearly usually due to aging
- Hyperopia – farsightedness – where you can only see objects that are far from you clearly
- Myopia – nearsightedness – where you can only see objects that are close to you clearly
- Astigmatism – where images are blurry regardless of whether they are close to you or far away from you
How is it done?
When performing LASIK surgery, your eye surgeon, or ophthalmologist, will use a laser to create a very thin flap in the cornea. You will then look at a bright light for a small amount of time while your surgeon uses a laser to reshape your cornea. While you may feel some pressure during the operation, it is a painless procedure and usually only takes about five minutes per eye.
What Should I Expect After?
After the surgery, your surgeon will ask you to rest for a while. Your eyes may itch or burn temporarily, and you could experience blurriness or haziness. This usually clears up by the next day. Most people see an improvement in their eyesight right away, although for some it could take a few days or weeks.
Am I a Candidate for LASIK?
If you are over the age of 18 and in good health with a stable eye prescription, you may be a candidate for LASIK surgery. As always, you should discuss this procedure with your surgeon and provide him/her with a complete medical history including any prescription medications you take and any history of dry eye.
LASIK surgery is a procedure that most people find beneficial as a way to alleviate the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. With this relatively simple operation, you may never have to search for those misplaced eyeglasses again!
